DVB-I Proof of Concept

Ireland’s national broadcaster RTÉ has completed a successful proof of concept of DVB-I, a technology that would enable the broadcaster to extend its popular DTT (digital terrestrial television) platform Saorview to all connected devices. The need to ensure they can continue to reach audiences and leverage increased IP-based content distribution were important drivers for the PoC. The PoC used the reference application created for the DVB Project by Sofia Digital and confirmed that DVB-I has many strengths, including being an open technical standard that provides a migration path to a hybrid DTT/IP future. RTÉ is carefully following developments in the trials under way in Germany and Italy with a view to potentially launching its own trial in due course.
