Codec Licensing and Web Video Streaming

Codec licensing has become more complex due to web streaming requirements, leading to multiple patent pools and royalty-free alternatives such as VP8, VP9 and AV1. Patent holders are focusing on services and content to recoup costs while streaming services are avoiding royalties with the CENC and CMAF technologies. HEVC adoption is slow due to an unsuitable licensing model.Codec licensing has become more complex due to web streaming requirements, leading to multiple patent pools and royalty-free alternatives such as VP8, VP9 and AV1. Tests of Live VVC 8K 60fps Encoding Detailed & Demoed At IBC 2023

This paper presents a VVC/H.266 encoder capable of 8Kp60 10-bit HDR real-time encoding with 24% lower bitrate than SpinHEVC. Tests on Intel Xeon Scalable Processors showed up to 70 fps at 30 Mbps and 40 Mbps at 60 fps for 8K video, proving its viability. It had minimal latency and MS-SSIM study revealed higher quality compared to HEVC and AV1. Future research will optimise it further. This paper presents a VVC/H.266 encoder capable of 8Kp60 10-bit HDR real-time encoding with 24% lower bitrate than SpinHEVC. Video Encoding: the Big Streaming Technology Guide [2023]

Video encoding compresses high-quality videos into digital formats to be streamed with no lag time. Popular methods include hardware/software such as Open Broadcaster Studio and AV1 which provide better compression than H.264/H.265. Adaptive Bit Rate streaming adjusts videos for each viewer while transcoding services like Zencoder, AWS Elemental, or Telestream Cloud optimize delivery. Codecs, containers, and protocols handle compression and packaging. Encoding and transcoding involve decomposing, processing, and re-encoding content for optimal delivery.
